Well, Republicans blinked today under mounting pressure, and decided to go ahead and vote to allow debate on the financial reform bill that is now before the Senate. After voting against debate three times, and after the disastrous testimony of Goldman Sachs executives on Tuesday, the obstruction technique was doomed to fail.
Meanwhile, in Arizona there have been a couple of new developments in the protests of SB1070, the law that was signed by Governor Brewer in an attempt to curb illegal immigration (Note: It doesn’t). The first development is a referendum being worked on that will, if successful, delay implementation of the law for at least two years. It uses an interesting loophole in the Arizona legislative process, and the timing of submitting the petitions for the referendum could delay implementation until after the 2010 election. Keep an eye on that.
The second is the shoot-yourself-in-the-foot boycott planned by some Arizona folks as a response to Boycott Arizona campaigns. The response? Boycott Mexican restaurants in Arizona. Never mind that the vast majority of these restaurants are owned by corporations or US citizens. They’re Mexican restaurants!
