Abandoned poochEL SEGUNDO KTLA — A $5,000 reward is being offered after an unknown suspect was seen dumping over one dozen small dogs on Imperial Highway last week.Several witnesses reported seeing a white van dump as many as 15 dogs in the middle of oncoming traffic on Imperial Highway at Main Street last Wednesday.El Segundo Police said as many as six dogs were rescued and taken to local adoption centers during the ordeal, which reportedly lasted as long as 6 hours.

There are two problems here. The first is the most obvious, someone dumping these poor pups into the middle of traffic. Who does that kind of thing? The despicable nature of that act alone turns my stomach.

But there is a second, more subtle issue here. Why are there so many dogs (cats, rabbits, etc.) without homes? There’s a simple way to minimize that problem and yet so many folks don’t do what it takes.

Spaying and neutering pets helps prevent overpopulation. Left to their devices, animals will mate, plain and simple. And that results in unwanted pets. So the fix there is simply, well, getting them fixed.

But another reason is because people fall in love with the cute little puppy in the window, without knowing what raising a puppy is like. And when the puppy grows into a dog that isn’t quite so cute anymore, the problems start.

Another simple fix to this problem is visiting your local rescue or shelter. If more folks did this before they looked at a puppy from a store, we’d have a whole lot less of these pups being left at the side of the road or in this case, in the road.
